Here is a good question that I recently received.
“I came across your site/blog and found it informative. I've been keenly
interested in 2012 and thought until yesterday that it would signify a
change in consciousness for humanity, trying to take the bright outlook.
However I'm not certain that is where we are headed and I wanted to ask
your opinion.
There have been other prophets, one 1000 years prior to the Mayans in
it Dec 2012. This show I watched yesterday indicates that when mother
Earth, Sun and the galactic center align, it will initiate a change in the poles,
thereby creating earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in that shift, that
literally humanity would be wiped out.
I was hopeful before I found that out. I'm curious to what you think
might happen. I have been praying for humanities change of conscience, but I
know that humans are quite arrogant, leaving behind and walking away from
their own irresponsibility, broken relations, broken families, broken marriages
and leaving a garbage dump in their path without repairing the damage.
I'm loosing faith that we will be able to turn it around, but I keep praying.
I would be interested in your opinion. What do you think is the best way
for humanity to approach the coming times?

In answer I can only pass on what I have been told mainly by Grandmother Lilly, who was ½ Maya and raised in those medicine ways, and what I have heard in conversations with Hopi Elders and Don Alejandro Cirilo Perez Oxlaj, the Maya Elder who is the keeper of the 17th Maya stone calendar, the one that tells of upcoming events.
I cannot say it better than Don Alejandro himself so I will refer you to this u-tube video of him explaining the miss-interpretations of the calendar so prevalent on the internet today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoP2ruhmtOc&feature=related
As far as what My Grandmother told me about the calendar, she is in agreement with Don Alejandro that no one can predict exactly when the shifts on this planet will happen.
According to the Hopi I have talked with, the time line is mutable depending on what decisions and actions we as the human race take.
No matter what happens in the near future, the wisdom and example of the Hopi people is what we all need in order to continue on this planet in a good way.
The Hopi have stone carvings that have predictions on them of many of the advances of human technology over the past several hundred years. Things like automobiles, air flight, telephone and power lines, paved roads, nuclear bombs and even the Hippie movement, three world wars, among many other events, have been prophesied in detail by the Hopi.
On one rock known as the Hopi prophecy stone, there is a depiction of two parallel time lines of human experience. You can find tons of info, not all of it correct, on the net about this rock.
The information I have on it comes from some papers written about 50 years ago by a Hopi Elder at the birth of Alex, a good friend of mine. The Elder adopted Alex and named him, being very close with his family. The Elder wrote down the information in hopes that when my friend grew up, at the right time he would share it.
In a nut shell it says that to properly understand the meaning of the two parallel lines on the rock, it must be understood that they represent to different perceptions during a single event. The top line represents all those who put their trust in technology to provide and save them during the earth shifts. The bottom line represents those who trust living in harmony with the earth ways to sustain them throughout the changes. (The Hopi have continued to do this in spite of the Governments continuous attempts to change their way of living.)
An example of this would be those who are waiting for the pharmaceutical companies and governments to come up with a vaccine for the Swine flue. By putting their trust in technology they may very well be in for great disappointment.
For those who trust in an earth based lifestyle to protect them from the new type of flue, there may be a much greater rate of resistance or even healing in the case of becoming infected. There are natural remedies that I find work better in combating the flue than any of the medicines I have tried. Remember I worked for over 15 years in the medical industry including 7 in the pharmaceutical industry. The remedies were posted on this blog previously, just scroll down a bit and you will find it.
The idea that different perceptions create differing realities during the same experience can be explained by this metaphor.
Two people are riding down a mountain road in a car. The driver is going very fast and is experiencing great thrills and exhilaration. The passenger is terrified and believes they are going to crash and die. Both people are having exactly the same physical experience; it is their perception of the situation that defines their reality. Imagine if they were to take on the others perception. They would both be having a thrilling ride or they would both be terrified and probably crash because of it.
In the same way, your perception of world events will create your reality and how you experience the upcoming events.
Now back to the two time lines. At one point they are joined by an intersecting line, this is a point in human experience where people chose to live in harmony with the earth rather than live in opposition of the laws of this planet and pursue technological advancement at the cost of our environment. After the point of the intersecting line, the line of technology goes off into erratic destruction while the line that is representative of a life in harmony with nature goes on in prosperity symbolized by corn plants.
Remember, abundance and prosperity are not the same thing as having lots of money. You can eat corn but money has very little nutritional value.
So here is the simple recipe of the Hopi to live by in order to experience the inevitable shifts and changes ahead. They may be economic, weather, earth structure changes, even political and religious changes, no matter what, living by this recipe is not only the way to go through them in a good way, but they are just a good way to live no matter what.
The recipe is in 4 parts.
1. Know your land.
2. Know your water.
3. Know your relationships.
4. Live humbly and in harmony with all of creation.
Now let me point out these are not in order of importance, in fact if you try to do them in order it won’t work. They key is to know your relationships first.
This means to develop your clan, your heart connection relationships. It will not work if you try to relate with like minded people, the relationships have to be heart connection based and directed by the Great Mystery.
I have a book coming out soon titled “The Way of the Sacred Relationship”, that explains how to build these relationships from the native perspective. There are 7 steps to this. It is important that you begin to pay attention to those who you are being drawn to, not because you believe the same things, but because you feel a deeper connection that comes from your spiritual self.
Once you know your relations, you will automatically learn to walk humbly and in harmony. It is a natural outcome of being in these kinds of relationships. From there you will find that your land and your water will come into your life if you don’t already have a relationship with them.
I hope this does not raise more questions than it answers, but I think you can see that by following the example of the Hopi Nation, buy learning to live in harmony as a people, by honoring the diversity and sovereignty of every village as individual, yet part of the whole, you can start to experience a very fulfilling life no matter what the physical events are around you.
Blue sky, Jim
PS. Use technology but do not become dependant on it.
Ceremonies in
I am just getting settled back at home after doing ceremony in two very different places. I was invited to go to NYC to speak and do a Pipe ceremony, little did I know what all would happen. I must say that I was treated extremely well and feed wonderful food by Maria and clan, Thanks!! Now I can rest and ride Raven in the mountains for the next couple of weeks before heading north to Sundance and then off to Pipestone with Ken, my Elder here, and Danny, a very gifted Pipe maker from
In the middle of the Pipe ceremony I felt lead to do a “wiping of tears” for those gathered there. I did not realize that about 15 folks joined in on that part of the ceremony, all having lost someone recently. Spirit led us into a time of healing and renewal, into celebrating the lives that were, that still are ongoing in the other side, and the wonderful lives we are given here and now.
The ceremony in Az. Had a similar confirmation as the one held on the same property back during the winter solstice. (See previous post on this blog)
About 55 people gathered to offer requests and thanks to the Great Mystery and to celebrate the wonderful time of year we are in.
As I was filling the Pipe a hawk flew over the group. This happened last time and as I said then, it may be a sign or it may be just a hawk. I said that we should watch it to see if it did anything unusual. It id not, it flew away. So I reminded everyone to be watching for a sign in nature, one that would be obvious to us all. As I walked around the circle with the Pipe, touching everyone on their shoulders and head, two hawks flew over us, one was a redtail and the other was a cooper’s hawk. These two hunt very differently from one another and would not normally be flying together! They circled over us for awhile until I said; “Now that’s a sign!”
The reason we are gifted signs in nature like this is to confirm that our prayers are heard and the answers are on the way. I have heard several reports so far and all are wonderful and positive. Thanks to the Mystery who shows us love unconditional.
I also had one of the most powerful times with the Pipes on the following day that I have ever experienced. Cat, who hold a Thunder Pipe for the
For those who have asked: here is the Swine Flu concoction. It works very well, especially if you start it as soon as you think you have been exposed. It works just as well for other flus and colds.
Thunders visit Ceremony at Deep Bay center, Flathead reservation.
Last weekend I gave a presentation about Native prophicies that are recorded in stone and the current situation of the world. The main point made was that we need to be finding our place in relationships and supportive communities before we try to find our place own individual place on the earth.
To prepare for the near future, this is a must if you want to go through the changes in our society and the changes of the earth herself with provision and grace.
The message was confirmed in a wonderful way during the following Pipe ceremony when the Thunders arrived (unpreditctedly) at just the right moment to make their point!
This message is of importance as we all try to aligne ourselves with our individual plan that the Great Mystery has placed in effect for the benifite of all the children of creation.
Coming later this month (June) I will be giving presentations/ceremony in New York and Northern Arizona. I will try to keep you all posted as things evolve.

Results from the Flu Pandemic ceremony/prayers held worldwide yesterday.
First, thank you all for raising your request to the Great Mystery concerning this problem. We had some very specific and interesting “responses” during the ceremony.
The first thing is that we can expect more and worse threats to human kind, as well as all of creation, in the near future. Not to be dismayed, there is good news as well. There are the natural cycles and consequences of the earth’s life and our actions. Global warming, new viruses, food shortages etc.
The word given is that although these things will happen, how you and yours experience them is up to you.
Bear with me, the Hopi nation has a rock with carvings on it called the Prophecy rock. Many of you have heard me talk of it before, but here is some fresh perspective in view of this currant threat.
On the rock there are two parallel lines that represent to paths of human kind. The top one shows the development of human technology and the results, both helpful and catastrophic to human kind. The development of modern communication, roads, cars, air travel as well as nuclear warfare, drought, famine, etc. is shown.
The line that runs beneath the technology line shows life in harmony with nature and the earth. It shows food and abundance continuing in to the future, the Techno line goes off into catastrophe. Here is what we were shown during the ceremony. Both lines are true and will happen, the difference is where you put your trust and hope. If you put your trust in pharmaceutical and vaccines, eventually there will be viruses and worse that with destroy you. If you put your trust in what is provided from being in a close relationship with the earth, you will find health and longevity.
To be more specific, it is not enough to know from a book or internet what plants are helpful with the flu, there are many. You need to have a living relationship with the plants so you can hear from it which one is good for that particular type of flu.
It sounds daunting while we live in this currant society, but it is easier that it seems.
I will try to explain more the next time I am on line, if you send questions to me it would help me know what areas to address.
The other thing revealed about all this in the ceremony was that two people can be standing next to each other, one will experience the threat one way and the other in a totally different way. It all depends on where you place your dependence. You can use technology, but if you depend on it, you will eventually be disappointed. It comes down to the way (plan) of the Great Mystery and the way (plan) of human kind without regard to the natural/spiritual laws put in place in the beginning.
I hope this will be helpful, as was said to us at the 11/11 ceremony 3 ½ years ago, “Know your relationship with the earth, with your water, walk humbly with all of creation and know your relationships.” (If you scroll down to older posts you can read about this)
Saturday is day of prayer for the Flu Pandemic situation.
could you pass it on? Thanks, Jim
Hi Everyone,
Two things first. This is not a fear based request, we have all the confidence that the Great Mystery has initiated this. Second thing, if you hold a Pipe, you hold a responsibility to use it for the good of all, that is what the first ones were given for, as well as all other since.
I am requesting you all to join in lifting this flu situation up in whatever form of prayer or mediation, etc. you do. Especially if you hold a pipe.
For those of you who will understand, I have placed tobacco out for this request as I cannot present it to you personally.
Here is the deal, this Saturday people all over the world are invited to send up requests to the Great Mystery for an intervention in this possible pandemic.
Before you say it is deserved, or that it is needed etc, let me remind you that you will be requesting for yourself, your family and your people, finally, for your race, the human race. The idea is to pray before you or someone you love gets it, damage control so to speak.
Here in Montana we will be in the sweat lodge with our pipes around 2 pm, MT. time. At the direction of the elders we will be praying in that order, for ourselves, our families and our people.
I will post the results of our ceremony on Sunday if I can get to a computer.
Please pass this request on to other groups you are part of.
Thanks,
Jim Tree
I received the following question from a woman in
I used my pipe a little over the years but only in the past year have I been using it regularly (once or more a month). I have gone to Inipi a number of times but have not been apprenticing with anyone. I don't feel called to be an Inipi pipe carrier. I do feel called to use my pipe. I have great respect for the pipe and have done small ceremony with a friend of mine and sometimes a couple friends. I feel these ceremonies are very sacred and yet I feel I need more guidance.
How do I know if I am qualified to hold a pipe ceremony for others?
If I am to hold ceremony for others, what is my responsibility and commitment? I have a friend who is a chanupa carrier (Lakota) and he says that once you become a ceremonial chanupa carrier, it's a lifetime commitment.
Thank you for waiting for this response to your questions. I live back up in the Mts and do not have Internet there so have to wait till I get into town.
I will answer some of your questions, but they raise and important one that I need time to properly write about, that will follow.
A personal Pipe is like any other blessing one has in their life, it is meant to be shared. It is more than proper for you to offer to send up smoke with friends or family, even a guest who has a need but you do not know well. The Pipes are here in our lives to assist and it is unfortunate that many never find the fulfillment of their creation and purpose due to lack of use.
The more time you spend with it the more it will help you, thus the happier it will be. (and you also)
As far as the dedication of holding a pipe for a lodge, be it Inipi or other, that is a different thing. That relationship is a more committed one, sort of like your personal pipe is a family member, but to hold the responsibility of a pipe of service for a group, that takes on a different kind of commitment. Maybe like being engaged. Take this a step further to the commitment of holding a medicine or ceremonial pipe, that is a marriage, you give up all others (i.e.spirtual paths) due to the time and energy you need to properly work with that pipe.
Australias fires
This is an e-mail I send to those who had attended a dual Pipe ceremony we held at the request of a sister who lives there. There were about 30 people who join in prayer with the thousands around the world who have felt the burden to help. I hope you dont mind that I posted this Brigett, I edited it a bit.
Hi Folks, I thought you might find this encouraging. More results from the dual Pipe ceremony we had with my elder Ken down in Darby. We were told tby the Pipes to request not just rain for the fire areas in Australia, but to ask for the help of the 5th wind (the whirlwind).
The Letting go ceremony
This article is in part a chapter in my new book due out this summer, “The way of the sacred circle.” A collection of several basic ceremonies, such as the vision quest, intended to give an individual the answers to such questions as “Who am I ,why am I here in this life, what is my purpose,?”
At the end of the book I am including a few important life ceremonies such as the crossing over ceremony, the wiping of tears ceremony, a wedding ceremony, the eagle marriage ceremony and the letting go ceremony.
Everyone comes to a point in their life where they are being held back by someone or something in their past. The energetic attachments of say, a completed partnership, can keep one from moving on to the present, robbing that person and others involved from full experience of the new situation.
This ceremony is very effective and should not be conducted unless you are certain you want to let go of someone or something. It is advisable to wait for at least two months after a separation to make sure that you really want and need to sever the ties that still hold you to whatever it is that is restricting your forward movement.
If you do this ceremony too soon and then later find you have the chance to continue with whatever it is you let go off, often the medicine of the ceremony has “buried” the connection, such as emotional love. You may never get it back, so please wait until you are sure you need to sever the ties that still bind.
It is not necessary for you to have someone assist you with this, it may need to be a very private ceremony. If you feel you would benefit by the support of someone who is mature and spiritual sensitive, by all means include them.
With that said, here is what you will need. In this particular ceremony, and there are many others that accomplish the same results, you need to have a body of water, preferably a flowing stream or river, but a lake or pond will do.
I will use the example of a relationship that needs to be let go, but you can adapt the ceremony to other things such as a past experience, traumatic incident, etc. You will need something that represents the person or situation. It should be something that is dear to you, as in my case it was a lock of hair from my x- wife.
You will also need to smudge, (please read “How I smudge” posted previously on this blog. Scroll down to find it) and have enough tobacco or cornmeal to from a 15 ft wide circle. If you have a large feather that is helpful, but not necessary.
I suggest you fast from the morning of the ceremony until you perform it a sundown. This sharpens your perceptions of the spiritual. Another thing that seems to increase the power of this ceremony is to conduct it on or within three days of a new moon. This I recommend.
You spend the time you would normally be eating your meals in prayer, thinking over the situation or relationship you are about to “bury.” When it is just before sundown, prepare your sacred circle at the edge of the water.
Smudge yourself and everything you have with you, then draw a circle with the cornmeal or tobacco starting in the east but going counterclockwise, you see, you are doing an “undoing” ceremony. The circle should go out into the water a few feet. If you are at a stream it is ok for the cornmeal to float away, you are just doing a physical action to make a spiritual statement. The statement is that nothing is allowed into this sacred circle unless you invite it.
Now, with the smudge still burning, Offer some of whatever you used to make the circle to the spirits of the east, call on there assistance, now do the same for the spirits of the north, west, then south. Now call on your mother and offer her some as well, followed by the Great Mystery above. Finally hold a bit to your heart, invite your higher self, your spirit self, to come to your assistance as well.
Each pinch is either dropped on the ground or put on the burning smudge. Finally speak to all those spirits who have come into your circle about why you called on their help. Ask them to separate you from the energy that holds you back. Hold up the item that represents the one who you wish to be “dead to you.” Show it to those gathered and explain why it represents what or who you need to be free of.
Then take the item and dip into the water that is within your circle seven times. With each dip say “I let go, or I am free, or I release” who or what ever. After the last dip let go of the item if it is in a stream that is flowing fast enough to carry it away. If you are at a pond or lake, toss the item out into it, so you cannot come back later to reclaim it.
It is a true severing with no turning back. Remember, think how sad it would be to sever the bond with someone out of hurt, fear, revenge or other strong emotion, only later to regret having done so when the opportunity comes to be together again.
I warn you, these ceremonies are old because they work. Please wait at least two months from a breakup to make sure you need to do this ceremony. Perhaps you will have adjusted without it in the mean time.

Questions about a woman’s moon time (Menses) and Pipes.
I received a question for a woman who expressed concern that even though she was told that women are honored in our traditions during their moon time, her experience during ceremonies was the opposite. Here is my response.
Dear Sandy,
Thank you for taking the time to write to me of your concerns. First, I want to say I am sorry you have such negative experiences at ceremonies. As you know, not everyone who has spiritual responsibilities, such as running a sweat, follows the required lifestyle as they should. It is like the situation where one who holds a Pipe for the people is not supposed to yield to anger, but many do not follow the wisdom of these traditions.
I can only tell you what I have been taught and what I have experienced in my life.
In the pre-reservation days most of the tribes were matriarchal, in word and in the life they lived. This shifted into patriarchal during the years of warfare and the internment of the survivors on the reservations. The extreme poverty and social genocide towards those people pretty much wiped out the old ways of respect.
There is a movement today among the men of our different first nations to try to re-learn how to properly respect all, especially women. It is a slow, perhaps generational, process.
In the meantime, the teachings precede the actual changes.
So, I will try to tell you about the teachings and hopefully share my own journey into true appreciation of the gift of the moon time given to my sisters.
A Pipe needs to be properly cared for, not only in the physical realm, but spiritually as well. Just as a Pipe will become plugged up with resins from smoking it, so it can become blocked spiritually speaking. Two things to be aware of, which can affect the performance of a Pipe, are improper storage and handling, and bringing it into public view for purposes other than ceremony.
In general, Pipes should be kept from coming into contact with a woman on her moon (menses), since this is when her personal medicine is at its peak power. Her medicine can actually overpower the medicine of the Pipe, as well as other sacred things.
This has nothing to do with the Judeo-Christian idea that a woman is “unclean” during her cycle. It is based on the understanding that she is in the time of her greatest power, the renewing of her power to create life. I have witnessed some amazing things accomplished by women on their moon doing sacred ceremony. When the medicine of the moon time is properly honored, the creative energy released during ceremony can be miraculous.
I was at a Sundance in central
She then had the men build a sweat lodge next to the lodge where four women who were on their moon were staying outside the regular camp.
I might add that these ladies were waited on hand and foot by designated men whose job it was to see to their every need, since they were unable to be part of the main dance.
The Grandma then led a sweat with the four women. During the third round, we could here them singing and drumming. At one point they stopped and we heard them all shout at the same time. Within minuets the rain and wind stopped. For the next few days there was thunder and lightening all around the area, but the dance grounds were dry and the sun warmed the dancers.
Now, how about a Moon Pipe? There is such a thing, but it is not very common.
There is much more to this than I will share, but I will tell about one type as an example.
This Sacred Pipe was created especially for use during a woman’s Moon Time. In Native American tradition the power or "medicine" of a woman during her menstrual cycle was the strongest form of creative energy. It is so powerful that other objects of spiritual power, such as a Sacred Pipe, could be affected in a negative way. Because of this, most Pipes are kept out of contact of a woman "on her moon."
Some of the most powerful creative ceremonies are accomplished by properly trained women on there moon time, usually lead by a woman who has matured beyond this cycle. (As in the Sundance story above) In order for this Pipe to be used during a woman’s moon time, it needed to be carved out of specific materials. Also, this Pipe was completed on the night of a full moon.

Any ceremony, be it a pipe ceremony or a church service, can be effective or it can be just a lot of noise and "feel good", but no results towards your needs and requests.
What makes a ceremony effective? Simple, it is one that has been instigated or called for by spirit. (God, Creator, the Thunders, Great Mystery, etc.) In my experience, we have witnessed some astounding results, i.e. miracles, during ceremonies with these Pipes. For a long time I thought it was due to the individual power of the pipe itself, and while this is true, if the ceremony is not called for by the Mystery through one of it's agents, then the effectiveness is at best limited.
Over the years, I have come to see that my part in a successful ceremony is like when my Grandma would invite me to help her bake cookies. She mixed the dough, I would cut out a few cookies, and then run off to play. Later when they were done, she would bring a plate of them into the living room to the joy of my family. At this point I would proclaim the "I made the cookies!"
It is this way with the ceremonies. If the Thunders are bringing a drought breaking rain to an area, they often invite me to bring the Black Thunder Pipe and tell me when to hold the ceremony. You see, they already know when they will start the rain, even though it is not in the forecast. If I am sensitive and listen to their invite, I lift the Pipe at just the right time to coincide with the cloudburst! Now what would the Thunders think if I said, "I brought the rain?" Probably just what my Grandma thought, cute. But as I mature, I come to understand that I played just a small part in the cycle of rain.
The Hopi understand this, but they also understand that they them selves are just as important to the process of the rain coming as are the Katchina spirits up on
So, to have powerful results from a ceremony you need to ask the spirits to tell you when and if it is to be held. Then you need to follow their instructions as to how it is to be done. A cloud splitting ceremony is done differently by each individual called to perform it. If I tried to do it the way say Frank Fools Crow did it, it would not work. But if the Thunders give me a ceremony to do it, it will happen. You could try to copy the way I did it and it would not work for you, you would need to have your own directions from them.
That is how it works.
One more thing about a successful ceremony, you need to be sensitive to and in harmony with two things. First, the cycles of nature, and then the cycles of spirit. When you sense the two cycles converging, you hold the ceremony.
I hope this information will help strengthen your own individual relationship with the Divine, for that is the ultimate goal of all interaction with the spirit dimension.

I am back in N.W. Montana after travels for the last two weeks. We were in Hotsprings, MT. over New Years and did a Pipe ceremony there for about 30 people. The main focus was on re-evaluating our paths/dirrection in light of changes and decisions made over the last few months. We also prayed for the health/healing of several Elders and friends. One of the issues was release from addiction. When we do a ceremony for this kind of thing there is usually a two week "grace" period, so to speak, where the grip of the addiction is weekend or taken away. It is of the upmost importance that one uses this window to build new habits to replace the old ones. If you just float through this time thinking you have been released from the addiction, you will fall back into it when the medicine granted to you through the ceremony abates. Also, it is important to reform your relationship to the spirit of whatever has you under its additcion. For instance, tobacco is a plant but a spirit as well. I have a relationship with it based on it being sacred to me. If you are trying to quit smoking, you need to use the time granted to establish a new relationship with the spirit of the plant. Aplogize for abusing it, ask for its help in overcoming your addiction.
I will write more in a day or so about the power and spirit of the hotsprings, that place is amazing!

I am still on the road returning from the ceremonies held in Arizona on the 21st, and after. I will give you all a full report in a few days, possible after the next ceremony on the 31st in Northern Montana. For now I will tell you that during the ceremony in Camp Verde last Sunday, we (around 50 folks) were blessed with continuing sundogs from the start of the ceremony and continued for 4 hours following. We also saw a very rare sign in the sky, not the horizon mind you, but directly over head. There were three seperate rainbows above us, one was inverted. From what we were told this is something so rare that only one has been reported in the last 40 plus years of weather history.
According to many Elders in the early 1800's, they said that one of the signs of the shift or change of the worlds would be increased sundogs. I will give more information about these predictions in a few days, until then, thank you all for your understanding in waiting for my post on this.
Blue sky, (and sundogs!)

I am on the road so please bear with me on spelling and content, I will fix this up when I get home.
I left you all in the middle of the night holding your vigil where you have fasted, purified and set up a sacred space in the woods somewhere. You have built your fire, hopefully out of only natural things, no paper or wood with nails etc. It is easy to start a fire using only dried pine needles and old pinecones as starter, followed by the dead, dry twigs off the lower parts of trees in the area.
You have cleared the fire area so it is safe, if you do not know of these things, look at any Boy Scout manual for fire making and follow the instructions. They were originally written in the early 1900's based on a movement called "Woodcraft", the way of the Redman.
Anyway, your fire has been burning and you have been tending it all night. You have divided the night into the four sections to correspond with the four fazes of human life as described previously.
You have written down the messages/revelations you received as to how these four parts of your life relate to the questions you have brought before your "council." (Your spiritual helpers/ancestors.)
As dawn arrives, you feel a freedom and clarity in your mind and heart. You have new wisdoms about your future. Now what do you do?
After the sun has fully come over the horizon, you put out your fire so that you can safely run your hand through the ashes without any excess heat.
You come down off your "hill" to meet your sponsor who escorts you to an awaiting group of supporters. You all gather for the "break-fast." I recommend it start with fruits and juice. Then later, after your body is grounded, you can move on to proteins and breads.
You have a feast with loved ones and share a few of the things that happened over the night.
Most of what happened you share only with your sponsor. You pray for proper interpretation and then you go rest for the remainder of the day.
That is it; you have done your vigil. Now I know this will leave more questions than I have answered, so please, ask away. Write to me at: jim@wayofthepipe.com

Seeking Divine guidance the Native way
Are you at a place in your life where you need Divine guidance? Here is a ceremony that has been effective for over a thousand years in receiving answers for life direction from the Creator. It is called a “Vigil.”
Presented here is part one of a two part Blog describing the Vigil ceremony.
The Vigil
Many are familiar with the term “Vision Quest” but may not have heard of another way of seeking answers to major life decisions called a “Vigil”.
In my tradition one only holds one vision quest in your lifetime, usually when a young person is coming into adulthood, but more commonly now-a-days, sometime in ones adult life. The purpose of the Vision Quest is to find out who you are and for what purpose you are here. You also receive very important “tools” from the Great Mystery during your quest to help you accomplish the task you were created for. These tools may be a power song, a sacred object of personal power, even a new name, a name that you are to grow into.
The reason you only do this once in a lifetime is that you do not need to find these answers more than once, who you are and why you are here does not change from the day you are born to the day you cross over. How you walk out those things may change and this is where the Vigil comes in.
When faced with a major life decision such as moving to a new location, selecting a partner, changing how you make your living, etc. or when you go through a change in your responsibilities to your people, graduate from one life stage to another, it is often the time to hold a vigil.
It is a shorter version of the vision quest where you focus on just the change or decision at hand. Instead of fasting for 3 or 4 days, you fast for one day, from sunrise to sunrise. You spend one night out in nature. Similar to a full quest, it is important to have a sponsor or supporter, someone who will assist you and watch over you while you are alone in your sacred circle. It is best if this person is someone who is spiritually mature, one who carries some spiritual responsibilities.
The reason for this is that one of their duties while you are out alone, they are to remotely “sense” how you are doing, an ability not common among the majority of people these days. Sometimes a spouse or someone who is very close to you can feel these things, but it is important that they have enough experience to know when they should come to your aid and when to not interrupt what the spirits may be doing for/with you.
So here is the procedure to holding a Vigil. I want to say that this is a template, not a rigid legalistic format that you must not deviate from. Allow for changes in your own situation due to time of year, the availability of things needed such as a cold flowing body of water, and what your own inner intuition tells you would be necessary for you to be able to receive the answers you seek. Follow the template but adjust when you feel something does not fit your own personal spiritual walk.
To start any ceremony, you need to be purified. This is just like washing up before one prepares a meal. You need to wash yourself and any tools or implements you will be using to prepare the “meal”, i.e. the ceremony.
There are two ways I use to purify myself before ceremony, the first is from my Cherokee tradition, called Going to water, and the alternative would be a sweat lodge which is just as effective. I will not go into what is involved in a sweat here, but I will warn you that no one should attempt to do a sweat unless the one leading it has been trained and released to hold such a responsibility by appropriate Elders. One can suffer both physical and spiritual harm if a sweat is not handled properly. My advice is to try going to water with a mature spiritual person.
You start the whole Vigil process by fasting the morning of the day you will be going out into nature to seek answers to your situation. You spend your time preparing your sacred circle, a place you have selected because you have felt a strong connection to when walking about in the area you want to hold the vigil in.
You will need to gather enough fire wood to keep your fire burning all through the night and you will need to construct a fire pit for the fire. Other things you should do while you are waiting for the time of preparation, (going to water or the sweat lodge), would be making 4 small “flags” of colored cloth. These are short sticks usually made out of one of the sacred woods such as red willow, cedar, juniper, plum or cherry wood, etc. The color of the little flags depends on your own tradition, but they always represent the four directions. For us Cherokee it is yellow, red, blue and white. These flags are placed at the outer edge of your circle when you set up your sacred space. More about that in the section below.
“Going to Water.”
I advise that one does not do this by themselves as it is common for the person going to water to have a somewhat overwhelming experience than would normally be expected by just submersing in cold water. There is a spiritual dynamic involved with this practice that should not be overlooked.
You and your helper first smudge yourselves with the smoke from burning sage. The smoke from sage is the equivalent in the spirit realm to water in our physical realm. It is used to “wash up” everything to be used in the ceremony as well as for ourselves. I like to roll up a wad of long leaf sage and burn it in an abalone shell. I usually place the smoldering ball of sage onto a bed of sweetgrass in the shell. This prevents any possible toxic fumes from the shell burning and also provides the smoke of the sweetgrass which is a special treat to the spirits who will be assisting you.
I wash/scrub my hands and my body in the smoke, then take handfuls of the sage smoke and wash them over my head, my forehead (mind) and then my heart. This way I have cleansed/prepared my whole physical and inner being. Later, at the site of the Vigil, I will do the same with all the things I will be using in the ceremony such as a Pipe, matches, and various other objects.
Now that you are “presentable” to be in the company of the spirits and the Creator, you proceed with going to water. You and your helper walk out into the stream until you are waist deep in the cold, flowing water. You face upstream and ask the spirits to come and assist you, to prepare you for your vigil. This is more than just a cleansing; it is a way to shift your consciousness from a physical awareness to a more spiritual one. You submerse your self seven times facing into the flow of the water, one dip for each of the seven directions. For the Cherokee it is first the east, the north, the west, the south, our mother earth, our creator above, and finally, to the center of our universe, our own higher self (your heart). Other tribes go in the opposite direction and many do not do the seventh one.
You say just before you go under the water, “I honor those helpers in the East”, etc. If you are blessed by the spirits, you may find it difficult to go under after the third or forth time, this is why you need a helper. They hold you under your belly and help pull you back up after each dip. I have seen people be so overcome during this preparation that they cold not get out of the stream on their own.
The Sacred Circle.
Now that you have prepared to enter your sacred circle, your supporter walks with you to it and makes sure you have everything you will need. You should have a way to light your fire, a covering such as a hide, blanket or bedroll, a Pipe if you have access to one and know how to use it and I recommend a journal to write in. This last thing is not traditional and is sometimes looked upon as a sort of crutch, but I have forgotten so many important things shown to me during ceremony that I would rather record what is given and be a little less than traditional, then to loss important information due to my over active mind or sleepiness.
Your area should already be prepared before you went to water with plenty of wood for the fire and your directional flags should be in place as well. After you have entered your space, your supporter "closes" the circle with a ring of tobacco or corn meal that has been smudged/cleansed and set aside as sacred. Closing the circle is done in the following manner. I start in the east and following my tradition go counter clockwise to the north, west south and then back to the east. Other traditions go the opposite direction; you will decide what the correct way is for our self.
I stand at the eastern "door" of the circle; the places marked by the eastern flag, and hold the tobacco up to the spirits that are responsible for that direction. I invite them to come join me and assist me in my seeking. I then walk a quarter circle to the next direction, sprinkling tobacco as I walk along. I invite those from that direction to come join us as well. The tobacco I held up to the east is dropped at that spot, followed by the sprinkling of more tobacco as I walk along to the next direction forming a line from one area to the next. This is repeated until I have come full circle back to the eastern door. Once this circle of tobacco has been formed, nothing is able to come into the sacred space unless invited. This applies to the physical realm as well as the spiritual realm.
An example of this is when my partner (at the time) wanted to do her vision quest. We selected the place that felt right to her, confirmed by an amazing interaction with a butterfly that landed in our hands which we were holding together at the time. (Her name was Kamama, Butterfly) I always watch for a confirmation of spiritual things from nature. It is trustworthy as we cannot manipulate the birds, animals or say, the weather.
After I closed the circle, she stayed there for three days. On the second day around
I want to add that the same thing happened with deer and other critters, but little birds and small squirrels ran back and forth without ever seeming to notice the boundary. This is because some creatures and some spirits are considered "innocents." They are allowed to enter sacred space without invitation as they only bring sweet goodness from the great Mystery.
Just as the Bears honored the boundary, so do the spirits. It is a spiritual law, no one but the innocents will cross a boundary set up properly with the right intentions and attitude of trust.
So now that you have set the circle, the supporter leaves and does not return physically, but does set aside the rest of the 24 hours to wait and pray for the seeker. I often use a system of a flag hanging in a tree to signal that things are going ok, if I check on the site from afar and do not see the flag, I know that the seeker is in need of some assistance.
The Vigil at night.
You should be settled into your circle with your fire going well before sunset. If you are not proficient at making and maintaining a fire, I recommend that you learn from someone before you go out into the woods alone. You owe it to all your relations out there to be able to have a safe fire, and you owe it to yourself to be able to maintain an effective fire to warm you throughout the night. The fire is more than just a means of warmth; it is a living spiritual being that will assist you with your vigil. Many times it will act as a window into the other dimensions to show you your answers. I have seen many things in the glow of the coals of a sacred fire.
So what makes a fire sacred? It is intent mostly. Intent expressed by your respect to this living being, fire. You make it out of only natural materials. I use dry pine needles and cones as my starter. I use dead, dry twigs off of trees for the kindling.
Did you ask the tree for permission to take its dead branches? If not, you may find that the branches won’t break and when they do they jab you and you get pieces of bark in your eyes.
The idea is to have a small fire that you tend throughout the night, not a big bonfire. A big fire will distract you, is dangerous, and will deplete your fuel to fast.
It is said that white men keep warm carrying wood for a big fire.
One of the reasons for the fire is to help you stay awake. By having to continually tend it, it forces you to remain alert. If your fire goes out and you cannot re-start it from its own coals, your vigil is over and you might as well go home.
As the night progresses, you will want to separate the hours into four equal parts. Each segment will be used to apply the question you have brought before the fire to how it connects with your past as a child, then how it relates to your teen years, then how it is for your life as an adult, and finally, how it will be in your future as an Elder.
Calling in the assistance.
After the circle is closed you will call on those from the different directions to come and assist you. I call this “calling a council”. I believe that each of us has a council made up of ancestors, spirits, angles, our higher self, the Mystery, etc. By inviting them to come and join you as you seek your answers; you access all that is for help.
The best way I know to do this is with a Pipe ceremony. If you do not have a Pipe or do not know how to properly conduct that type of ceremony, then you can call them in this way.
Again, have your shell lined with shredded sweetgrass, I put a layer of flat cedar on top of the sweetgrass, and then I put a burning ball of long leaf sage onto the cedar. I hold tobacco up to the direction and invite those who live in those areas to come and join in the council. After each directional invitation, I put the pinch of tobacco onto the burning sage. When I am done, I thank them all for joining me and present my questions to them. We then spend the rest of the night in communion.
The answers you receive may be in many forms, and come to you in fragments throughout the night. This is why I bring a note pad. I write the answers down as well as any visitors or unusual circumstances that occur.
I forgot to tell you all how to end your Vigil. It is of the most importance that you end the ceremony by expressing your appreciation to those beneficial spirits/angles who came to it. This is simple, but if not done can have some unpleasant consequences.
I address all those who gathered to help me throughout the night and tell them I send them home with honor and appreciation for their assistance. I mention that the ceremony is complete with the putting out of the fire and that is it. Simple, but important.

Follow up note: I really depend on you guys for input. Here is a response to this post that is right on the money, Wado Shinning Eyes!
Hello Everyone,
I have had problems with the free newsletter from my web site, www.wayofthepipe.com, so I decided to create a blog to inform those interested in the current work of the Pipes in my care, as well as answer the questions you all have sent in to me concerning various aspects of Pipes in general.
To get this blog started I am posting a report originaly written three years ago after a ceremony in Arizona on 11/11. In light of the current finacial stuff going on around the world I thought you might find it interesting reading, esspecialy the predictions given during the ceremony about what is happening today, three years later.
Remember, we are to live in trust, not fear, the whole reason we humans were originaly gifted the Pipe was for help and assistance, "Uncommon Assistance" as Nicolas Black Elk called it in the 1930's.
Blue sky all,
Tree
PS. Please feel free to send me questions or comments @ jim@wayofthepipe.com. I will post the answers as soon as I am able.
